The Student Hive
Creating Social Living for Student Accommodations
MArch 1 | 2023
My final year project focuses on student housing, aiming to question current practices and address the Zero Carbon theme. I utilize Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) to achieve standardization and off-site construction. By integrating computational design, I merge soft and hard systems to create diverse, sustainable social spaces and unit arrangements.
I designed a student accommodation building for the MMU campus, interacting with MMU estates as the client, and gaining insights into their ambitions. The project adheres to DfMA methods, using sustainable building materials while complying with mass timber DfMA limitations in the UK.
Engaging with MMU Estates has provided practical experience and an understanding of the challenges in student accommodation design. This project has broadened my knowledge of sustainable building techniques and their practical implementation.
In summary, this real-world project has equipped me with valuable skills and knowledge in architecture, enhancing my ability to tackle future challenges in the field.
